Azadi Tower’s cinematheque to open with “Oppenheimer”
TEHRAN-The cinematheque of Azadi Tower Cultural and Artistic Complex in Tehran will be inaugurated on Wednesday by showing the 2023 biographical film “Oppenheimer,” written and directed by Christopher Nolan.
Screening of the film as the first program of Azadi Tower’s cinematheque will start at 4 p.m., and will be followed by a review session in the presence of the film critic Maziar Fekri and journalist Somayeh Alipour, Honaronline reported.
Based on the 2005 biography “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film chronicles the career of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb, with the story predominantly focusing on his studies, his direction of the Manhattan Project during World War II, and his eventual fall from grace due to his 1954 security hearing.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist credited with being the “father of the atomic bomb”. The other cast members include Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.
The film has received critical acclaim and grossed over $950 million worldwide, becoming the third-highest-grossing film of 2023, the highest-grossing World War II-related film, and the highest-grossing biographical film.
The Azadi Tower is a monument on Azadi Square. It is one of the landmarks of Tehran, marking the west entrance to the city, and is part of the Azadi Cultural and Artistic Complex, which also includes an underground museum.
