Public outcry in front of Swedish embassy over life sentence for Iranian detainee

TEHRAN – Expressing discontent, a group of people held a protest outside the Swedish embassy in Tehran against the life sentence given to jailed Iranian citizen Hamid Nouri.

In a notable demonstration of disapproval, the group, comprising students and concerned individuals, gathered in front of the Swedish embassy on Thursday, December 23.

The assembly aimed to voice their dissatisfaction with the life imprisonment sentence recently imposed by a Swedish court on Hamid Nouri, an Iranian national detained in Sweden. The crowd expressed their concerns and objections regarding the verdict, highlighting the significance of the gathering as a symbol of solidarity and protest against the perceived injustice.

Nouri, a former Iranian judiciary official, faced arrest upon arriving at Stockholm Airport in November 2019 and was promptly imprisoned. Unfounded allegations, orchestrated by elements linked to the Mujahedin-e-Khalq terror Organization (MKO), which openly boasts about conducting terrorist operations against Iranian officials and civilians, formed the basis of his trial.

On July 14, 2022, a Swedish court handed down a life sentence to Nouri. The Iranian government officials deemed the court illegal, highlighting its reliance on accusations from the MKO.

Since his arrest, Nouri has remained in solitary confinement, raising serious concerns about the legality of his detention.
