TEHRAN- An Iranian parliamentary committee chairman, Mohammad Saleh Jokar, criticized the U.S. veto of the ceasefire resolution tabled by UAE, calling for an overhaul of the structure of international bodies, including the UN Security Council.

During a public meeting of the Iranian Parliament on Monday, Jokar said, “We censure the abusive actions of the Zionist regime and the criminal association of the United States with this regime.”

He called the U.S. veto “regrettable,” adding that it is necessary to make changes in the structure of international institutions and the UN Security Council.

The United States vetoed the resolution backed by almost all other Council members. The U.S. move took place as the UN chief called the situation in Gaza a “humanitarian nightmare.”

Thirteen Security Council members voted in favor of the brief draft resolution, put forward by the United Arab Emirates, while the United Kingdom abstained.

The vote came after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made a rare move on Wednesday to formally warn the 15-member council of a threat to global peace and security from the two-month-long war in the Gaza Strip.
