Israel resumes Gaza bombing

December 1, 2023 - 11:21

More than 20 Palestinians killed since Israeli army resumed attacks on Gaza after expiration of truce, according to health officials.

International mediators, including Qatar, Egypt and the United States, had pushed for another extension of the pause, which expired at 7am local time (05:00 GMT) on Friday.

Thirty Palestinian prisoners have been freed from Israeli jails in the seventh exchange of the truce after more Israeli captives were released in Gaza.

More than 15,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 7. In Israel, the official death toll stands at about 1,200.

UNICEF spokesperson James Elder, who is in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, has told Al Jazeera Palestinians in Gaza are once again full of fear after the resumption of Israel’s military offensive.

Speaking from outside Nasser Hospital, he said ambulances had already started transporting people to the largest active remaining complex in the enclave.

“Hospital staff obviously have already been working 24/7,” he said.

“This hospital, despite the immense efforts of its brave health staff, cannot take another assault. People cannot take another assault.”

Elder also reminded that thousands of people sleep in the Nasser Hospital – beyond the fact it is working at 200 percent capacity for patients who need medical care.

Hamas: ‘Solution is not a truce, but the end of Israeli occupation’

Osama Hamdan, senior spokesperson for Hamas, had a phone interview with Al Jazeera.

Here are his translated comments:

* The solution is not to have a truce. The real solution is to find mechanisms to put an end to this occupation.

* We have spent time having conversations with all mediators, and we need to thank the efforts of Egypt and Qatar to try to reach a formula to end the aggression. But the aggression has stopped everything.

* We are open to any efforts that aim to put an end to the aggression that benefits the interest of our people.

* The Hamas leadership was cooperating with efforts to put an end to the aggression but unfortunately, some parties were not ready to exert more effort, other than Qatar and Egypt.

* The American administration hasn’t put a lot of pressure on Israel.
