Actress Parvaneh Massoumi passes away at 78

TEHRAN-Iranian actress Parvaneh Massoumi passed away at a hospital in Rasht, northern Gilan province on November 27.

Massoumi, who was hospitalized in the past days for intestinal perforation, was transferred to the ICU on Monday due to a lung infection and died a few hours later at the age of 78, ISNA reported.

During 40 years of professional experience, she performed in over 30 feature films and more than 20 TV series.

Born in 1944 in Tehran, Massoumi started her acting career in 1972 with a short role in the movie “Bita”. In her next film in the same year, “Downpour” written and directed by Bahram Beyzai, she played as the lead actress. The success of the film in Tehran International Film Festival made her known to the cinema community in Iran.

Massoumi has received various accolades, including two Crystal Simorgh awards for the best actress from the Fajr Film Festival. She received her first award in 1985 for “Chrysanthemums” (1984) by Rasoul Sadrameli and another one in 1988 for “Dowry for Robaab” (1987) by Siamak Shayeghi.

Her other famous films include “The Journey” (1972) and “The Raven” (1978) both by Beyzai, “Off-Limits” (1986) by Rakhshan Banietemad, and “Captain Khorshid” (1987) by Nasser Taghvai.

On TV, she first appeared in the series “Rebel in the Jungle” directed by Behrouz Afkhami. Other notable series in her resume include “Young Policeman” by Sirous Moghaddam, “Traveller of Rey” and “Martyr of Kufa” both by Davood Mir-Bagheri, and “Prophet Joseph” by Farajollah Salahshour.
