Iranian-Austrian coach Mohebbi on verge of winning accolade in CSL
TEHRAN - Shanghai Port Football Club, led by the Spanish head coach Javier Pereira and assisted by Iranian-Austrian coach Jahanyar Mohebbi, is poised to reclaim the Chinese Football Super League (CSL) title, which has eluded them since 2018.
Mohebbi, a 31-year-old coach, is slowly gaining recognition among Iranian football fans. He began his coaching journey alongside Iranian-American coach Afshin Ghotbi, collaborating with him in Chinese clubs Shijiazhuang Ever Bright and Cangzhou Mighty Lions, as well as the Iranian team Foolad.
Mohebbi then became a part of the technical staff under Spanish coach Javier Pereira at the Chinese Henan SSLM club, gaining his trust along the way. Pereira had such strong trust in Mohebbi that he decided to bring him along to La Liga. Mohebbi spent a while on Levante's bench with Perrreira. Now, they are both part of Shanghai Port and are on the brink of winning the Chinese super league title.
With only two matchdays remaining in the Super League competition, Shanghai Port holds a commanding 5-point lead over second-place team Shandong Taishan. They are just one draw away from securing the coveted title.
As Pereira and Mohebbi's contracts near expiration, clubs from Iran, the UAE, and Qatar have expressed interest. The future is uncertain, but a move to the West Asian leagues may occur.
On the other hand, the Shanghai Port club managers are interested in renewing the contract with their technical staff. Yet, it's improbable since Pereira desires a fresh challenge and Jahaiyar Mohebbi will accompany him.
