TEHRAN – Iran has nominated Harireh, a ruined ancient town in the Persian Gulf, for possible inclusion on the intangible cultural heritage register of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

“We seek an ICESCO label for Harireh, which is one of the historical human settlements in northern parts of the Persian Gulf,” Kish Island’s tourism chief said on Thursday.

“Such a registration will be a positive step towards attracting foreign tourists, and getting closer to registering the site on the UNESCO [World Heritage] list,” the official said.

Located on Kish Island and covering some 120 hectares in area, Harireh consists of an old public bathroom, mosque, aristocratic building, and an aqueduct, to name a few.

Some historians believe Harireh was built after the destruction of Siraf, a once-thriving Iranian port in the Persian Gulf.

The coral island is known for its pristine beaches, sparkling water, and warm hospitality. Since the early 1970s, it has been well-developed with modern amenities, yet it retains its traditional charm. It is a perfect destination for those who want to combine luxury with culture and indulge in water sports such as scuba diving or jet skiing.

Moreover, Kish is a shopping paradise, with its shopping centers and bazaars, which offer everything from spices to jewelry. In addition, the island has a range of hotels that cater to all budgets, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly ones. The island offers a range of traditional and international cuisines, making it a food lover's paradise.
