What DC hawks get wrong about Biden's Iran policy

October 16, 2023 - 22:17

TEHRAN- The nypost.com published an analysis on October 15 of Biden’s policy in West Asia titled "Appeaser in chief Biden doesn't understand Iran-and it's proven deadly". The article, written by hawkish politician John Bolton, blamed Biden as the cause of the ongoing chaos in Tel Aviv.

Pointing to Biden’s team, Bolton who served as Trump's national security advisor, accuses the U.S. president of pursuing an appeasement policy in West Asia, namely Iran, which has paved the way for the current uproar. This is while neither Biden has been an appeaser nor Iran the cause of Tel Aviv’s defeats.

Hamas launched an operation, dubbed Storm, on October 7, to respond to the 75 years of Israelis’ cruelties, insults, crimes, occupation, etc.

The Israeli casualties caused by the operation have made the Western think tanks lick the wounds.

The nypost.com, for its turn, sacrificed the humanitarian values, American taxpayers, and the U.S. president to somehow voice Israel’s weakness.

JCOPA a fiction not an appeaser

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCOPA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, was termed a “fatally flawed 2015 nuclear agreement” and “one of the worst diplomatic mistakes in US history” in the analysis, while the agreement set limitations on Iran’s nuclear and military advancements.

“The deal…was negotiated by many of the same people Biden hired to steer his Iran policy,” said Bolton. This is while the leaked voice of Robert Malley, former US envoy for Iran, proved that the JCOPA was an effort to push Iran to the corner, yet there is no soothing sing in Biden’s approach toward Iran.

Appeasement or weakness

Accusing Biden of a policy of appeasement toward Tehran, Bolton said, “We also need to reverse Biden’s strategic calculus for the Middle East, which has once again proven completely wrong.”

“If there were not an Israel, we would have to invent one,” said Biden earlier in his career, voicing the depth of Israel’s influence on the American political system. Now, the veteran Zionist-minded politician faces a flood of criticisms for his policy toward Israel.

Within ten days of the operation's start, Biden and his administration went the extra mile to fully back Tel Aviv.

“First and foremost, the Secretary has been engaged with our Israeli partners to ensure that Israel has everything that it needs to defend itself,” said Matthew Miller, the U.S. State Department spokesperson said in his October 10 presser, referring to Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s firm support for the Israeli regime.

“Our support for Israel is unwavering,” said Miller to highlight that the U.S. would not leave Israel alone.

“We will always be there by your side,” Secretary Blinken told Netanyahu, upon his first visit to Tel Aviv since the beginning of the Hamas operation.

Lloyd Austin, the secretary of defense, also gave the message of “unwavering support” to his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant, saying Israel will receive an update on operations to restore security.

John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, also said that the United States would announce more aid to the Zionist regime in the coming days.

What was called the wrong policy is actually the weakness of the U.S. in the region, or better say an American decline. Nations no longer tolerate the third party’s existence under the pretext of security.

Netanyahu leads ultra- Orthodox  cabinet

Netanyahu’s alliance with a far-right party opened the door for more extremism.

The alliance, announced by Netanyahu’s Likud and the ultranationalist Jewish Home party, was aimed at solidifying a potential right-wing coalition after the April 9 parliamentary election.

Tel Aviv pays for its violations and extremism, yet the Western think tanks are seeking ways to put much more pressure on the Biden administration to give more money for the hawkish Israeli cabinet.

Washington-Tel Aviv conflict of interests

“From day one of his presidency, his negotiators have made concession after concession… other evidence of appeasement abounds, including weakening the enforcement of economic sanctions, particularly against the export of Iranian oil to countries like China, reimposed on Iran in 2019 after the Trump administration withdrew from the nuclear deal,” said Bolton, criticizing Biden for its Iran policy. Yet the question is which sanction has been lifted during Biden’s presidency?

Elsewhere, the writer points to the release of Iran’s frozen funds in South Korea, saying Biden bended knee to Iran.

Needless to say, the U.S. with its bullying policy illegally blocked the Iranian assets and now its release has nothing to do with “bending knee” as Bolton claims.

Biden follows the national interests of the U.S. and in this particular case there may be contradictions between the American and Israeli interests.

Although the U.S. is in economic competition with China and is dealing with the Russia-Ukraine conflict, it still spent bucks to back Tel Aviv.

Washington, turning a closed eye on humanitarian values, backed the Zionist regime to keep its crimes against Palestinians. However, many nations and diplomats around the world have voiced their solidarity with the Palestinians.

While the massacre of Palestinians is being backed by Western officials, saying Tel Aviv has the right of to defend itself, a message came from the chief Chinese diplomat saying Israel’s attacks on Gazans went much more than the self-defense.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi criticized Israel in a Saturday call with Prince Faisal bin Farhan, his Saudi Arabia counterpart.  Wang said that Israel had “gone beyond the scope of self-defense."

“Israel should earnestly listen to the calls of the international community and the United Nations secretary-general and stop imposing collective punishment on the people of Gaza,” Wang insisted.

In the end, though Tel Aviv desperately seeks further help even at the price of the Washington-Tehran confrontation, it faces global solidarity with the Palestinians.
