TEHRAN—Over 150 recreational programs have been designed to promote green tourism across Iran, the deputy tourism minister said on Monday.

“More than 150 tourism programs will be implemented in more than 60 counties since the beginning of tourism week (which starts on Sep. 27 to mark World Tourism Day),” Ali-Asghar Shalbafian said on Monday.

The official underlined that green tourism is becoming increasingly popular among travelers who are seeking an authentic travel experience while minimizing their environmental footprint.

By organizing a wide variety of programs in the areas of sustainable tourism, the ministry intends to engage all stakeholders in the green tourism industry, the official said in an address to a press conference.

The government and tourism industry in the Islamic Republic have worked together to develop a sustainable tourism strategy that includes protecting natural areas, supporting local communities, and promoting responsible travel practices.

In addition, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has identified investments as one of the key priorities for tourism’s recovery and future growth and development. In fact, for World Tourism Day 2023, UNWTO highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments for people, for planet and for prosperity.

Having diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Iran is an ideal destination for green tourism. One example of a sustainable tourism initiative in Iran is the Caspian Hyrcanian mixed forests. The forests are a UNESCO biosphere reserve and are home to a diverse range of plant and animal species. Visitors to the area can engage in eco-tourism activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and camping. The local community is actively involved in sustainable tourism practices, including the use of eco-friendly accommodations and promoting responsible tourism.

Another example of green tourism in Iran is the village of Abyaneh. This ancient village is located in the foothills of the Karkas Mountains and is known for its red-brick houses and traditional clothing. Visitors to Abyaneh can participate in cultural tours, stay in eco-friendly guesthouses, and support local artisans by purchasing handmade goods.

Moreover, the ancient land has many natural landscapes, such as the Alborz Mountains and the Dasht-e Kavir desert. Visitors can participate in sustainable tourism practices such as hiking, camping, and safari tours. The local community is actively involved in sustainable tourism practices, including the protection of wildlife and the promotion of responsible tourism.
