Leader performs funeral prayer for Abbas Sheibani
TEHRAN - Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei performed funeral prayer for Abbas Sheibani, a former Iranian politician, on Friday morning in Tehran.
Funeral prayer is a Muslim ritual performed on the deceased before he/she is laid to rest.
Sheibani, principlist politician, died on Thursday, December 22, at the age of 91. He spent 13 years of his life in jail during the Pahlavi regime.
He was a founding member of the Iranian Freedom Movement. Sheibani was also a member of the Council of the Islamic Revolution of Iran and served in the parliament for five terms.
Sheibani, a trained physician, also served as chancellor of the University of Tehran from 1983 to 1984 and minister of agriculture from 1979 to 1980. He ran for president in July 1981 and again in 1989, coming in second in both elections. Lastly, he served as city councilor in the metropolis of Tehran.
Among those who attended the funeral procession were former health ministers Qazizadeh Hashemi and Alireza Marandi.
