Iraq PM to visit Iran on Monday

TEHRAN -Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia will visit Iran on Monday at the head an economic and political delegation.

Al-Sudani is visiting Tehran upon an invitation by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

He will be officially welcomed by President Ebrahim Raisi at Saadabad Palace in northern Tehran.

“In his one-day visit the prime minister of Iraq will hold official meetings and a memorandum of understanding will also be signed for developing Tehran-Baghdad cooperation,” Mohammad Jamshidi, political director of the presidential office, told IRNA.

Jamshidi said the visit will mostly focus on economic and political issues in line with the sitting Raisi administration’s policy in prioritizing ties with neighboring and regional states.

Assessing the government’s interactions with neighbors as very good ever since Raisi took over as president in August 2021, he said, “Regional foreign policy and developing ties with neighbors form cornerstone of the current government and this policy is fortunately proceeding well, and we are noticing exchange of visits between Iran and regional and neighboring countries.”

He added any country that is willing to cooperate with Iran the government will come it.

Prime Minister al-Sudani on Saturday met with Iranian ambassador to Baghdad Mohammad Kazem Ale-Sadeq, during which both sides “highlighted the importance of continuing to hold meetings between Iraq and Iran in the security sector in a manner that preserves the sovereignty of the two countries,” according to a statement from the premier’s office,
