TEHRAN - Niavaran Cultural-Historical Complex, which comprises historical palaces and museums in northern Tehran, has launched a special cultural program dedicated to children.

Niavaran complex has launched various cultural programs on the occasion of International Children's Day and National Children’s Week, IRNA reported on Saturday.

A collection of children’s works being kept in the treasure trove of this palace complex, and next to it, a selection of old cartoons and animated movies, are on display for visitors, the report said.

Selected works from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, international anecdotes, as well as historical dolls are among other themes being explored during the event, which runs till October 14.

Iran annually observes National Children’s Day on October 8 and National Children’s Week on October 8 to 11, nationwide. Over the one-week celebration, the Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (an Iranian institution with a wide range of cultural and artistic activities in the field of mental and cultural development for children and young adults) has coordinated and is running various recreational and educational programs for the children.

Covering an area of about eleven hectares, Niavaran Cultural-Historical Complex is composed of several landmark buildings, museums, and monuments constructed in the 19th and 20th centuries during the Pahlavi and late Qajar eras.

The history of the palace complex stretches back to about 280 years ago when Fath-Ali Shah of the Qajar Dynasty ordered a summer residence to be built over the then countryside area of the capital. The two-story Ahmad-Shahi pavilion is one of the highlights of the complex.

The main palace of the complex was originally erected for royal ceremonies and gatherings. However, it later turned into a residence of Mohammad Reza Shah and his family.

With an area of 9,000 square meters, the palace is entirely adorned with magnificent plasterwork, mirror work, and tile work. Its architecture boasts a blend of pre-and post-Islamic arts.

Its beautifully decorated and fully furnished interior features loads of artworks, such as precious paintings and sculptures by Iranian and foreign artists.
