TEHRAN -- Iran touring and tourism officials and experts believe that Lorestan Province possesses great natural, cultural and historical sights and attractions which need to be streamlined in order to promote tourism industry. They believe that these sights and attractions can bring in a considerable amount of money for the province. The Head of the Environment Protection Organization, Dr. Masoumeh Ebtekar, in her recent trip to Lorestan said, "The province is one of the richest provinces from the standpoint of climatic conditions and natural attractions." She said that if optimal use of the provincial forests and rivers is made, the region will become the tourism pivot of the country.
Meanwhile, the Head of Iran Touring and Tourism Bureau of Lorestan, Goudarz Nazari, said that although Lorestan has great potentials in the area of tourism industry, it lacks sightseeing and residential facilities. He added that the lack of sightseeing and residential facilities in Lorestan has hindered the thriving of tourism industry. Nazari further said that there is only a third-class hotel in the province, in which even the local residents are not willing to stay.
"If necessary facilities are provided for the region, Lorestan will become a major tourism pivot of the country," he added. Moreover, the head of Iran Touring and Tourism Organization, Seyed Mohammad Moezzoddin, said establishing tourist service offices by the private sector can promote tourism industry in the region. Different fruitful and fruitless trees, waterfalls, marshes and high mountains are among the sights which attract hundreds of domestic and foreign tourists.
Oshtorankouh is one of the unique regions in Lorestan, which can promote tourism industry if exploited appropriately. Due to its special ecological qualities, the region is a suitable environment for growth and reproduction of wild animals, especially big mammals. Existence of such animals has turned the region into a hunting ground for the nomads. Due to its location in the center of Zagros mountain chain, Oshtorankouh has cold mountain tops with an estimated height of 3,500 meters above the sea level and relatively warm valleys.
It has three climatic conditions: cold, steppe cold and warm and dry Mediterranean. Gahar Lake is one of the most beautiful natural mountainous lakes of the country, which shines like a gem in the heart of the Oshtorankouh preserve. The lake, 2,360 meters high above the sea level, is located 40 kilometers south of Doroud, next to the highest mountain in Oshtorankouh. One of the special qualities of Gahar lake, which is 500-800 meters long and has an area of 1,700 square meters, is the existence of willow-groves around it, which attract the tourists and nature-lovers.
According to the experts on environment and natural resources, Oshtorankouh is an important habitat for goats in Iran and West Asia. Lorestan environment officials say that there are different kinds of animals in the region including brown bear, wild cat, ewe, leopard, hyena, wolf, jackal, boar and other kinds of mammals. Moreover, a variety of birds can be observed in the region.
