COLOMBO The editor of a pro-opposition newspaper was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in a suburb in Sri Lanka's capital, police officials said on Wednesday. The editor of Satana (battle), Rohana Kumara, was shot when he was travelling home in a taxi late on Tuesday after receiving a phonecall saying his house was being attacked, police said. No suspects have been arrested and investigations were continuing.
The killing led to a furore in parliament on Wednesday as opposition lawmakers demanded a quick investigation into the murder. "Rohana Kumara was a journalist with rare quality who fearlessly fought against social injustice, corruption, and terror, perpetrated by the people in seat of power," Gamini Athukorale, general secretary of the main opposition United National Party, said in a statement.
