EC set to amend city council law regarding minorities
July 9, 2018 - 20:11

TEHRAN – The head of Councils and Domestic Affairs Committee of Majlis (parliament) said on Sunday that in the next meeting of the Expediency Council a bill to amend the law on city councils will be discussed, a move that would legalize the presence of religious minorities in councils.
The bill was set to be discussed in the last meeting of the Expediency Council but it was postponed because of other issues that were raised, said Mohammad Javad Kolivand, IRNA reported.
It comes almost a year after the Guardian Council suspended Sepanta Niknam, a Zoroastrian, after his re-election as council member in Yazd. The issue has been a matter of controversy ever since.
