TEHRAN – Iranian troupes are scheduled to perform two plays by French writers at Tehran’s theaters in two weeks.

A group composed of Iranian students of the French language will stage Albert Camus’ play of the Absurd “The Misunderstanding” (“Le Malentendu”) in its original language at Baran Theater for seven nights beginning July 1.

“I have been always been interested in Camus’ works,” director Javad Molania told the Persian service of MNA on Wednesday.

“I wanted to stage the play a few years ago, but I could not obtain cultural officials’ permission as they argued that the story of the play is bitter,” he added.

He expressed his satisfaction that his dream will finally come true in the near future.

Afterwards, his troupe will also give performances in Isfahan, which he called a major center for Iranian students of the French language.     

“The Misunderstanding” is about a man who has been living overseas for many years and then returns home, only to find his sister and widowed mother are making a living by taking in lodgers and murdering them. Since neither his sister nor his mother recognize him, he becomes a lodger himself without revealing his identity.

Saqi Atai is also scheduled to direct Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s “Enigma Variations” (“Variations Énigmatiques”) at Paytakhat Theater from July 5.

“The play has the hidden meaning of Schmitt’s special manly, psychological view of love,” she told the Persian service of Honaronline on Wednesday.

“This is the reason why I chose the play,” she added. 

Vahid Aqapur and Hooman Kiai are the main members of the cast.
