Zarif: Lackluster implementation of nuclear deal will make progress ‘elusive’

July 15, 2016 - 18:10

TEHRAN – The Iranian foreign minister has said that the July 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the 5+1 group was a “triumph of diplomacy over coercion”.

“Iran deal was triumph of diplomacy over coercion. Same stark choice for U.S. today, and reminder: old methods produce same old failures,” Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted on Friday.

In another message on his Twitter account, Zarif said, “Progress will remain elusive as long as short-sighted bragging, lackluster implementation of obligations and tired slogans are preferred.”

“Mutual respect and fulfillment of JCPOA obligations to ensure promised dividends will open new horizons,” the chief diplomat wrote on his Twitter in a separate message.

In July 2015, Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) finalized the text of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in Vienna. The nuclear deal took effect in January 2016.

European Union foreign policy chief Frederica Mogherini issued a statement on Thursday saying that the EU will continue to support implementation of the JCPOA.

“The European Union will continue to actively support the full and effective implementation of the JCPOA throughout the lifetime of the agreement, as well as the UNSC Resolution 2231,” the statement said.
