TEHRAN – Several stories written by Dutch author and illustrator of children’s books Leo Lionni (1910-1999) have been translated into Persian by Gholmareza Emami in a new collection named “Black Fish”.

The collection has been published by Behnegar Publications and contains 12 selected stories all in four volumes, Emami told the Persian service of ILNA on Sunday.

The “Black Fish” collection takes its name from the main character of Lionni’s “Swimmy”, which is about a happy black fish living among a number of red fish in corner of a sea.

“Leo Lionni is a writer and illustrator who brilliantly painted the beauty of life and nature in his illustrations for children. His books have won international acclaim and this collection contains a selection of his wonderful stories,” Emami added.

Born in the Netherlands, Lionni moved to Italy and lived there before moving to the United States in 1939, where he worked as an art director.

Lionni wrote and illustrated more than 40 highly acclaimed children’s books. He received the 1984 American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal and was a four-time Caldecott Honor Winner for “Inch by Inch”, “Frederick”, and “Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse”. Lionni died in Tuscany, Italy in 1999.
