TEHRAN – The Persian carpet “Every Tourist, a Knot”, woven by tourists visiting the central Iranian city of Yazd, was unveiled during a ceremony at Tehran’s Milad Tower on Monday evening.

 

The carpet bearing eight images of Yazd historical sites, such as Dowlatabad Garden, Yazd Jame Mosque, and Amir Chakhmaq Square, took two years to be completed. 

 

Milad Tower director Farzad Hushyar attended the ceremony, during which the carpet was donated to UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office Director Tarja Virtanen.

 

A short film about Yazd tourism attractions was screened on the sidelines of the ceremony and Virtanen delivered a short speech.

 

She said that she was quite impressed by the film, and the carpet and its design, and that she has decided to go visit Yazd someday.

 

The plan to weave the carpet was announced by the Setareh Kavir Group, an Iranian cartel producing machine-made carpet. Weaving commenced at the Dowlatabad Garden in Yazd on March 21, 2010 and the 230x140 carpet was completed on April 4, 2012.

 

The group made the plan to commemorate the year 2010, which was celebrated as the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures by UNESCO.

 

The carpet was woven with the help of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, the Yazd Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Department and Yazd Office of Culture and Islamic Guidance.

 

There are also plans to display the carpet at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
