Lebanese Civilian Wounded in Israeli Attack

TYRE, Lebanon A Lebanese civilian was seriously wounded on Monday during an Israeli bombardment of an area just outside the zone occupied by the Zionist state in South Lebanon, Lebanese police said. Mohammad Selim Fayyad, 50, was hit in the stomach by shell fragments when Israel attacked the area of Majdel-Zun, north of the western sector of the zone. The attack followed an operation by the Hezbollah group against an Israeli position at Bayyada, west of Majdel-Zun, Lebanese security sources said.
In Beirut, a Hezbollah statement said it attacked the Israeli position with rockets and automatic weapons and demolished its fortifications Fayyad was the first civilian victim of fighting in South Lebanon this year. In 1997, 40 civilians died and another 128 were injured. Hezbollah spearheads attacks to oust Israel from its self-declared security zone in South Lebanon set up to protect its northern territory.
