Iran beat Puerto Rico in four sets (26-24, 25-16, 22-25, 25-20) on Wednesday in the FIVB Men's World Olympic Qualifying Tournament at Tokyo Metropolitan Gym.
Alireza Nadi and Amir Ghafour sparked the Iran attack with 13 points apiece.
Ezequiel Cruz led Puerto Rico with 14 points. Juan Figueroa had 12 points.
"It was tough for our players today after the loss to Australia yesterday. We won the first set in difficult circumstances and then played better after that. We have not yet arrived at our best level in the tournament," Iran coach Julio Velasco said in the post-match news conference.
Iran defeated South Korea and China in its first two matches and lost to Australia. The Persians will face Venezuela on Thursday while Puerto Rico will play Serbia.
