Waging war on Syria is like playing with gunpowder: Majlis speaker

TEHRAN – Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has warned certain countries, which have not experienced any war in their countries, not to wage a war in Syria because, in that case, they will play with “gunpowder”.

In a recent interview with Lebanon’s Al-Manar television, Larijani said that the countries are only seeking to sell their weapons but they do not have the faintest idea that the fire, to which they are adding fuel, will finally engulf them.

Commenting on the recent war in Libya and the intervention of some Western states in the country, he said that the Libyan people sought freedom and democracy but the intervention of NATO forces changed the situation and destroyed their infrastructure.

He added that the Islamic Republic of Iran, which has always supported the Muslim nations’ revolutionary movements, was opposed to the West’s military intervention in Libya from the very first.

The senior lawmaker said Iran sided with the Muslim people of Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, and Bahrain, because they had stood up for their civic rights.

In response to a question about differences of opinion between Iran and Turkey over the Syrian issue, Larijani said there are some differences in this regard but they are not “strategic.”

He went on to say that both Tehran and Istanbul believe that the will of the Syrian people should be taken into consideration.

Iran and Turkey support reform in Syria and therefore there is not a “strategic” difference as to the issue, the parliament speaker explained.
