Sanctions against Iran ineffective: Russian envoy

December 30, 2011 - 17:12
TEHRAN – The newly-appointed Russian ambassador to Tehran says efforts by certain Western countries to impose more sanctions against Iran, which can lead to international instability, have been futile.

Levan Dzhagaryan made the remarks during an interview with ISNA which was published on Friday.

Dzhagaryan said international instability is very dangerous and that is why Russia is opposed to sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Russia insists on a continuation of talks between Iran the 5+1 group (the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany) and will spare no effort to pave the way for further negotiations in order to find a peaceful solution to the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program and to prevent conflict and instability in the region, he stated.

However, certain countries are seeking to create a tense atmosphere in regard to Iran’s nuclear issue, he added.

Iran-Russia relations are historical and close

Elsewhere in his remarks, Dzhagaryan described ties between Tehran and Moscow as historical and close and said the two countries hold political dialogue on a regular basis about various issues such as the latest developments in the Middle East and North Africa region, Iran’s nuclear program, the Afghanistan and Iraq issues, and the Caspian Sea legal regime.

He went on to say that the Islamic Republic and the Russian Federation are also cooperating on other issues including the campaign against terrorism and illicit drugs.

Tension between Iran and West ‘the greatest danger’ in 2012

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin has said that the conflict erupting between Iran and certain Western countries poses the “greatest danger” in the upcoming year.

According to the RT, Churkin commented on the Iranian-Western standoff and said, “This is a very dangerous scenario.”

But “we do believe that a peaceful solution is possible,” he said, adding that to avoid serious consequences the negotiations route needs to be followed.
