Leader's Support for Guardian Council Does Not Mean Approval of All Its Measures

The recent remarks by the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei in support of the Guardian Council of the Constitution, a major supervisory body in the country's political structure, surely do not mean that the Leader approves of every measure taken so far by the council. In all rational political systems, attempts are made to create powerful official supervisory bodies side by side with the people's supervisory role.

People's supervision leads to a general supervision in the country, and, the official supervisory bodies consolidate this supervision on account of their access to state documents. Unfortunately in the past, the Guardian Council almost overlooked two matters. First, as the Guardian Council has a supervisory role, it must deem itself accountable to the people because people are also charged with the task of supervision.

Secondly, the council must be more careful in appointing the elections supervisors lest political leanings influence this crucial matter and tarnish the image of this highly significant body. In reality people's supervision is a complement to official supervision. Hence, taking the people into confidence in this regard will help to settle the dust. It should be noted that undermining the supervisory bodies is by no means in the interest of the people.

It will only serve the interest of the factions which are not committed to lawful activities.
