Aref says public demands high on next parliament agenda
TEHRAN - Mohammad Reza Aref, a top reformist who led the parliamentary elections in Tehran, said on Sunday that if his faction succeeds in taking the parliament’s helm, he will make it a priority to respond to the demands of Iranians.
Among these demand are better economic indexes, promoting living standards, controlling inflation, and creating jobs, Aref explained.
In order to achieve these goals the ground should be laid for such responsiveness and factions should avoid misusing their status, the reformist figure noted.
The runoff parliamentary election will be held on Friday. The campaigning started on April 21 and will continue until April 28. 136 candidates will be vying for remaing 68 parlimentary seats.
During the February 26 parliamentary elections, the 30-strong reformist ticket topped by Aref won a landslide victory in the capital Tehran, unprecedented in living memory of Iranians.
A highlight in the Stanford-educated politician's remarks was a call for political campaigns based on ethics and rationality.
“We are of the belief that under no conditions we should fall short of morals and values.”
Political goals are obtainable via solidarity and election campaigns should not take this away from candidates, according to Aref.
Also in the run-up to the parliamentary runoffs, the former presidential candidate warned candidates against mudslinging. “People are defenders of values and I ask competitors to bear this in mind in the run-up to the election.”
During the February parliamentary elections, a mix of candidates from different political backgrounds including reformists, principlists, independents, and conservatives secured seats in the parliament.
Some, on the other hand, failed, eyeing on votes in the run-offs to make it to the parliament.
