TEHRAN – The Belgian neo-conceptual artist Wim Delvoye believes Iran is a wonderful country for its numerous fine galleries.

Delvoy, whose exhibition opened in the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMCA) on Monday, says that he will have a lot to do with Iran in the future, the Persian service of ISNA reported on Tuesday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of his exhibit, Delvoy said that he was lucky enough to have displayed his exhibit in the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art with its record of history.

The artist, known for creating inventive and often shocking projects, expressed his thanks to the museum officials and the curators for their excellent collaboration.

TMCA director Majid Mollanoruzi also made a short speech referring to works on display and said, “Delvoye’s artworks indicate that an artist can make use of old structures and narrate art with a new language. His works need to be studied from different aspects especially for Iranians who are quite familiar with the Persian art of miniature.

“For example, he has made use of the styles used in the baroque as well as the Persian embossed technique, giving students of art hope that they can also make use of the great treasure of their country,” he added.

Iranian artists including Taha Behbahani, Qobad Shiva, Bijan Basiri, Atila Pesyani, Mohammad Farnud, Mojtaba Aqai and Kambiz Sabri were among the guests at the opening ceremony.

Born in 1965, Delvoye is also known for his gothic style work. He creates oversized laser-cut steel sculptures of objects typically found in construction such as a cement truck.

The three-month exhibit is displaying Delvoye’s sculptures in the form of car tires and gas cylinders, a series of aluminum suitcases embossed with silver or brass, and the frame of a Maserati sports car decorated in a similar style.

The exhibit will be running until May 13 at the museum located on North Kargar St., next to Laleh Park.
