TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has reiterated Tehran’s position that the Islamic Republic has no hostility towards Saudi Arabia, hoping that Saudi officials will come to their senses.

“As I have told before, we believe that Saudi Arabia has taken provocative actions following Iran’s nuclear agreement and we hope to see their wise behavior soon,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday.
On January 2, Saudi Arabia executed prominent Shiite theologian cleric Nimr al-Nimr and in the evening of the same day crowds of furious Iranian demonstrators stormed the building of the Saudi embassy in Tehran and the consulate office in Mashhad.
Saudi Arabia-Iran ties have been severed following the incident. Bahrain, Sudan and Djibouti supported Saudi Arabia. The United Arab Emirates downgraded the level of diplomatic representation and Kuwait and Qatar recalled their ambassadors. Apart from that, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain halted air service with Iran.
Iran has taken steps to punish those who attacked the diplomatic buildings.
