MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, Iranian Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei said Iran could cancel visas for tourists arriving in the country from Russia on a unilateral basis.

Meanwhile, the tourism deputy chief of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, Morteza Rahmani Movahed, told RIA Novosti in an interview that Iran is ready to support the idea of unilateral abolition of visa regime with Russia but would prefer a mutual step from Moscow.
Movahed added that Tehran would welcome a mutual step on visas cancellation from the Russian government.
“If Russia agrees on a mutual step, I think, everything can be arranged within a week.”
He recalled that Russia and Iran had previously agreed to discuss the prospects of easing mutual travel, in particular, the visa regime.
In October, Iran extended the term for Russian visas issued at the airport to 30 days.
