TEHRAN - A senior Iranian diplomat has threatened that the Islamic Republic will not take part in future international talks on the Syrian conflict if Tehran finds negotiations futile.
“As a matter of principle, the Islamic Republic of Iran will participate in negotiations that will be productive and contribute to a political solution in Syria,” Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in an interview with Arabic-language news channel al-Alam on Monday. In the meeting in Vienna some countries, especially Saudi Arabia, played an “unconstructive and negative role,” Amir-Abdollahian said, noting that they also lacked “robust reasoning”.
For the first time Iran was invited to the Syria talks which was attended by many countries including heavyweight countries such as the United States, Russia, Germany, France, Britain, and China.
During the talks, Amir-Abdollahian said, Iran insisted on the need to prepare the ground for the Syrian people to decide about the political structure of their country.
According the Press TV, the diplomat emphasized that Tehran never supports a process that would allow other countries to make decisions about Syria’s political future.
Amir-Abdollahian said Iran will continue to support negotiations and fight against terrorism in the war-hit Syria.
Iran has sent military advisor to help the Syrian army in the war against terrorist groups including Daesh.
