TEHRAN - Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said that Russia consulted with Iran before taking military action against Daesh - also called ISIL and ISIS - in Syria.

Larijani made the remarks in a joint press conference with Bogdan Borusewicz, the speaker of the Polish Senate, in Tehran on Saturday.

Larijani said it is too soon to make judgment about the success of Russia’s attacks on terrorists inside Syria. However, he said Russia’s attacks on ISIL positions have been “precise”.

Russia started bombing in Syria in late September.

Iran has backed Russia’s aerial attacks against ISIL in Syria. On Saturday, Ali Akbar Velayati, a top Iranian politician, said it is likely that Russia also target ISIL positions inside Iraq.

Russian news agencies have reported Russian airstrikes have targeted command and communications centers, weapons depots and training centers used by militants and terrorists.

Maj-Gen Igor Konashenkov, a military spokesman, said on Saturday that Russia’s air force had made 64 deployments against 55 ISIL targets in Syria in the past 24 hours. These took place in the provinces of Raqqa, Hama, Damascus and Aleppo.

Russia has also launched cruise missiles against targets in Syria from warships in the Caspian Sea, about 1,500km (930 miles) away.
