TEHRAN – President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday that the current security and stability in Iran is a result of self-sacrifice by the disabled war veterans, a reference to those Iranian soldiers and volunteer forces who were maimed during Iraq’s war against Iran in the 1980s.

“You proved to the world that the Iranian people are patient, resistant and brave who never relinquish their rights and will never give up,” he told a gathering disabled war veterans whose disability is 70 percent.

Rouhani described the disabled war veterans as examples of “patience, resistance and dignity”.

He also urged the people to cooperate and make efforts in order to uphold the values and objectives of the Sacred Defense.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the president said the enemies, despite enjoying great capital and power, cannot cause damage to the “dignity” of the Iranian nation.

“You (disabled war veterans) proved (to the world) that the Iranian people are patient, resistant, and brave and they will never compromise on their rights and don’t submit,” he noted.

On September 1980 Iraq, who was then ruled by Saddam Hussein, invaded Iran and captured large swathes of the Iranian territory. The resistance against the invading Saddam Army is called Sacred Defense in Iran.
