TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says Tehran will continue to bolster its defense power, stressing that Iran has no intention of invading any country.

“We will continue boosting the country’s defense power to achieve our objectives and we should always be ready to defend our land, nation and interests,” Rouhani said in a ceremony held to mark the National Defense Industry Day in Tehran on Saturday.

The president stressed that the Islamic Republic needs no one’s permission to develop, buy and sell weapons if it is necessary.

“We can negotiate with other countries only when we are powerful. If a country does not have power and independence, it cannot seek real peace.”

He added that Iran’s defense industries are aimed at defending the country’s territory, interests and people, saying Tehran has never sought to launch aggression against other countries.

Iran pursues a deterrent and defensive strategy and its policy is based on détente, convergence and confidence-building with other countries, he said.

The Iranian president also said that deterrence will not be reached only through military and defense industries and cultural, scientific, political and economic capabilities are also required to realize national strength.

Rouhani also pointed to the nuclear agreement between Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) and described it as a “win-win” deal which “serves the interests of all”.

Elsewhere, Rouhani said that there are many threats and problems in the Middle East region, however, Iran is a secure and peaceful country.

Rouhani added Iran’s power would ensure regional stability and expressed the country’s readiness to form a coalition with countries in the region to fight terrorism.

Iran and the six major powers reached a nuclear agreement in Vienna on July 14.
