TEHRAN - A university professor was killed and another injured in two separate bomb attacks in Tehran on Monday morning.
The two academics were identified as the late Majid Shahriari and Fereydoun Abbasi Davani of the Physics Department of Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti University. The police say that in both attacks, terrorists rode motorcycles and attached magnetic bombs to the physicists’ cars. The two academics were both on their way to Shahid Beheshti University in northern Tehran when they were attacked.
In the first bomb attack, Majid Shahriari was killed and his wife and another person were injured.
The second bomb attack, which occurred in the vicinity of Shahid Beheshti University, injured Professor Fereydoun Abbasi Davani and his wife. They were immediately transferred to hospital and reportedly are now in good condition.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks, Tehran Police Chief Hossein Sajedinia told reporters.
Police and security officials have launched investigations into these incidents, he added.
Officials condemn terrorist attacks
On Monday, the Presidential Office issued a statement condemning the “disgraceful” terrorist attacks.
“The blood of martyr Shahriari will disgrace the so-called upholders of democracy and human rights even more,” the statement said.
Iranian parliamentarians also condemned the attacks, shouting “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” at a Majlis session on Monday.
Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Director Ali Akbar Salehi also issued a condolence message over the martyrdom of the prominent scientist, saying the enemies cannot hinder Iran’s scientific progress or attain their evil goals by trying to eliminate Iranian scientists.
The Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee also condemned the incident.
“The Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee condemns these terrorist incidents,” said the committee’s rapporteur, MP Kazem Jalali.
The enemies cannot undermine the Iranian nation’s determination through the use of these outdated methods, he added.
These terrorist attacks are meant to disrupt Iran’s nuclear program, but these actions will not weaken Iranians’ resolve to attain their goals, he said.
MP Mohammad Javad Jahangirzadeh of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said that it is clear that the Zionists were behind the incidents because they seek to impede the progress of Iran’s nuclear program by terrorizing Iranian scientists. -
