TEHRAN – Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi has announced that Iran will produce an advanced anti-aircraft missile system similar to S-300 in the near future.

“We have planned to build a long-range air defense missile system similar to S-300. By God’s grace and by the Iranian engineers’ efforts, we will reach self-sufficiency in this regard.”
The S-300 is a series of Russian long range surface-to-air missile systems.
According to a contract signed in 2005, Russia was required to deliver S-300 systems to Iran.
However, Russia has announced that it will not deliver S-300 missiles to Iran.
“Russia will not deliver S-300 air defense missiles to Iran as planned because such transfers are prohibited under UN sanctions” the Russian Chief of Staff General Nikolai Makarov told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
