December 1, 1998 - 0:0
TEHRAN Martyr Ayatollah Hasan Modarres joined the rank of fighters since the outset of the constitutional movement, struggling against despotism. Due to his competency and scholarly and religious qualifications he was selected by Maraja (religious authorities) in Najaf as one of the five prominent ulema to enter the second term of the National Cosultative Assembly. In the third term of the Parliament, he objected to the ultimatum given by Russian Tzar, which disregarded the independence of Iran. In the mayhem of World War I, he untiringly mobilized the nation and liberals to fight the Russian troops and prevent Iran's partition.
In the fourth term of the assembly, Modarres became the leader of the majority of deputies. Upon the initative of Modarres, the 1919 contract was abolishhed. In the course of the fifth term of the parliament, Modarres served as the leader of the minority faction engaged in struggle against Reza Khan and its treacherous policies, playing an important role in making Reza Khan desperate in the game of republic and mounting opposition to monarchy.
It was in the fifth term of the Majlis that Reza Khan ordered his agents to assassinate Modarres, and they opened fire on him. He was hospitalized for some time due to the bullets, but Modarres resumed his struggle against the dictator and his British masters more resolutely after recovery. In the sixth term of the Parliament, Modarres was elected to the assembly and did not spare a moment in disclosing the dictatorial nature of Reza Khan and pursuing unceasing struggle against imperialist policies in Iran and defending the rights of the people.
Finally, Reza Khan saw the life of Modarres in conflict with his tyranical government and, therefore, exiled him to Khaff fortress, a district of Torbat Haidariyeh, Khorasan Province. After some years of living in exile, Reza Khan had Modarres martyred by one of his agents at a time of day when Modarres was fasting and saying his prayers. Modarres was described by the Majlis Speaker Hojjatoleslam Ali Akbar Nateq Nouri as a learned and brave jurisprudent with great political insight.
Ayatollah Modarres, whose martyrdom anniversary is observed in Iran as the Majlis Day, was martyred 60 years ago on the orders of Reza Khan. Speaking at a commemoration ceremony marking the 60th martyrdom anniversary of Ayatollah Modarres, the Majlis Day, Nateq Nouri called for further studies on the life of the ayatollah. He also called for the establishment of a research center in this regard.
Referring to the efforts by the arrogant powers to separate religion from politics, he said that such powers have realized that they cannot mislead the virtuous clerics if religion plays an active role in political scenes. The recent mischievous plots against Velayat-e Faqih were masterminded by outsiders, who exploited the naivety of a certain individual and, therefore, spoiled the record of his anti-Shah campaign, he added.
