Tehran metro among world’s top 20 busiest ones

@T= TEHRAN -- Recording about 459 million passenger rides in 2009, Tehran metro is among the top 20 busiest underground railways in the world, managing director of Tehran Urban Metro Operation said here on Wednesday.
“Every day about 1.5 million people travel by Tehran metro, making it one of the world busiest metros,” Jafar Rabi’i explained to 15 visiting Iraqi mayors.
It is expected to transfer about 6 million passengers in a day, when the new lines become operational, Rabi’i added.
According to Rabi’i, “There has been an increase of 131% in number of passengers over the past ten years.”
The rate of passengers traveling by metro has reached from 3.5 million in 1999 to 459 million in 2009, he noted.
He described Tehran metro development as the proud of the whole Islamic World.
The metro now totally includes 108km of track, and once completed the length would reach 430km.
