10 officers arrested in connection with Kahrizak case

TEHRAN - National Police Chief Esmaeil Ahmedi-Moqaddam stated here on Wednesday that 10 police officers have been arrested in connection with prisoner abuse at Kahrizak detention center.

Armed Forces Judicial Organization ordered arrest of the police officers and it is now investigating their cases, Ahmedi-Moqaddam told reporters in Tehran.
However, he said, political issues should not affect the legal proceedings.
Justice Minister Morteza Bakhtiari announced that the officers will be tried openly.
Bakhtiari also said the committee set up by Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani is seriously look into complaints filed by a number of people who had been detained in the post-election unrest.
Ahmedi-Moqaddam said police do not intervene with rallies inside universities.
“Police forces do not get involved in any form in issues inside universities” and in the past few days certain people expressed their protests in rallies at certain universities, the police chief noted.
Asked about the Tehran University dormitory incident, Ahmedi-Moqaddam said a lack of coordination between relevant officials at different levels caused the incident.
If university officials had had the necessary coordination certain people who were not following official orders would not have interfered in this issue, he pointed out
