Iran, Kenya hold talks on expansion of ties

TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and his Kenyan counterpart have discussed ways to strengthen ties between the two countries.

In a meeting with visiting Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula on Wednesday, Mottaki described the current level of Tehran-Nairobi relations as satisfactory, expressing hope that Wetangula’s visit will open a new chapter in bilateral ties.
He said Iran and Kenya have the potential to increase their trade exchanges and develop parliamentary cooperation. For example, he said Iran can export its products to Kenya and import Kenyan tea.
Mottaki added that Tehran is ready to do joint transportation projects with Kenya, saying the two countries can also prepare grounds for developing cooperation on air transportation and port installation during the visit of the Iranian transport minister to Nairobi in the future.
Wetangula, for his part, expressed hope that Tehran-Nairobi relations will expand in the future.
He referred to the memorandums of understanding signed between the two countries in agricultural field and said the talks between Iranian and Kenyan companies on irrigation and transportation projects have yielded positive results.
Wetangula also said Kenya will assure the Iranian research committee that it produces high quality tea and expressed hope the relevant talks will increase in the future.
The top Kenyan diplomat also said the talks over oil and energy cooperation between Tehran and Nairobi have made significant progresses and that the two countries can now start investments on envisioned projects, he added.
The two ministers also exchanged views on developments in the Middle East, environmental issues, status of the Non-Aligned Movement and the UN structure
