TEHRAN – Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi has cautioned presidential candidates that making allegations against persons in media outlets could result in prosecution.

In the time period before the Friday election, presidential contenders must respect ethics and abide by the law in interviews with media and in their debates and documentaries broadcast by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, Shahroudi said in a meeting with senior Judiciary officials in Tehran.
The Judiciary chief said all candidates are experienced politicians who have been cleared by the Guardian Council and therefore they should pay attention to the advice of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei in regard to election campaigns.
The Supreme Leader declared on Thursday that he is not opposed to presidential debates but believes that they should be conducted within a “religious framework”.
After the IRIB launched a series of live televised debates between the presidential hopefuls on June 2, some presidential candidates used the podium to accuse each other and senior officials of economic corruption and graft.
