Lebanese president’s trip to Tehran on Nov. 24 will be historic: ambassador

TEHRAN – Tehran’s Ambassador to Beirut, Mohammad Reza Sheibani, has described the Lebanese president’s visit to Iran on November 24 as historic which will mark a turning point in cementing ties between the two states, Fars news agency reported on Saturday.
Lebanon’s President Michael Michel Suleiman will start a two-day visit to Iran on November 24.“The visit of Lebanese president to Iran will be historic and important which will reinforce relations between the two friendly and brotherly states,” Sheibani told reporters after meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh.
He added it is not the first time that a Lebanese president is visiting Iran but the visit at this juncture after an agreement between “brother groups” and the formation of a unity government the visit of Suleiman as the “symbol of national unity” is an important event.
Suleiman was sworn in as president on May 25 after Parliament elected him in a long-delayed vote following an 18-month political stalemate. Immediately after his election, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad phoned to congratulate him and invited him to visit Iran.
Suleiman, a former army commander, is seen as unbiased political leader in Lebanon. Since he took office he has been pushing for ‘national dialogue’ among rival Lebanese groups.
Envoy meets Lebanese speaker
According to IRNA, Sheibani on Friday held talks with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on the latest developments in the region and Lebanon as well.
Sheibani expressed the Islamic Republic’s satisfaction over the political progress and national reconciliation in Lebanon.
He reaffirmed Iran’s support for national unity and resistance movement in Lebanon.
Sheibani also held talks with Lebanese Minister of Defense Elias Murr on Friday on the latest international, regional and domestic developments
