TEHRAN -- A number of Iranian musicians and the violin-family string instrument players of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine will join together for a series of concerts in Tehran in January 2009.

Selections to be performed include Iranian tar virtuoso Hossein Alizadeh’s “Osyan” (“Revolt”, 1983) “Torkaman” (“Turkmen”, 1986), and “Neynava” (1995), and Mohammad Reza Darvishi’s “Kalidar” for their repertoire, the Persian service of MNA reported on Friday.
“Torkaman” had originally been written for setar, but Alizadeh and Hushyar Khayyam have rearranged it for violin-family string instruments and setar in an orchestral performance.
Ordered by the Farhang Moaser publication company, “Kalidar” is latest work of Darvishi, who composed it based on a novel of the same name authored by Iranian novelist Mahmud Dowlatabadi.
“Although the piece has been composed due to an order, it is my perception of the powerful story of ‘Kalidar’,” Darvishi said.
The Iranian Music Society and Persian magazine Farhan-o-Ahang will cosponsor the concerts.
