ANKARA (AFP) — An explosion overnight at a natural gas pipeline from Iran to Turkey sparked a fire but caused no casualties, Turkish officials said Monday.

The explosion, the cause of which remains unknown, occurred several kilometres (miles) from the Iranian border in the eastern Turkish province of Agri, governor Mehmet Cetin told the Anatolia news agency.
An energy ministry official in Ankara confirmed the incident, but could not give further details.
“There has been no finding so far to suggest a terrorist attack. We are considering the possibility of a gas build-up,” Cetin said, adding that an investigation into the incident was continuing.
Militants from the separatist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), who are active in the region, have sabotaged gas and oil pipelines in the past as part of their 23-year separatist campaign in mainly Kurdish east and southeast Turkey.
The fire was brought under control after the authorities cut the gas flow, Anatolia reported.
