Islamic parliamentary cooperation urged

Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki has reiterated the significance of parliamentary cooperation among Islamic countries.

Mottaki made the remark in a meeting in Tehran with the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), Ebrahim Oaf, who ended his tenure on Wednesday.
Commending the activities of the IPU’s secretariat during Oaf’s eight-year term, Mottaki restated that the need for Islamic parliamentary collaboration arose when unilateralism dominated the international arena.
Oaf, for his part, noted that the September 11 attacks shifted West’s confrontation with the Soviet Union to U.S. opposition to Muslim states.
Thus, the convergence of Islamic states to counter US invasions gained significance and the inter-parliamentary sessions of Islamic countries became crucial, he added.
Pointing to the cultural, religious and historical commonalities of Iran and Egypt, Oaf stressed the willingness of the two nations to enhance reciprocal ties.
