Tehran’s oldest public library reopens today

TEHRAN -- Tehran’s oldest and largest public library located inside Park-e Shahr in downtown Tehran is to reopen today after a two-month renovation program.
The head of the library, Mohammad Sedqi said that the library had been partly open in the past two months, adding, “The renovation included the complete renewal of its water pipes, the repair of desks and book shelves and the painting of the building.He went on to say that the repair budget had been provided by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and the management of Tehran’s public libraries.
The library was originally established on an area covering 2830 square meters inside the park in 1961, but it was transferred to its present location on the southern side of the park 10 years later.
Designed by the architect Farah Pahlavi, the former Iranian empress, it is still the largest public library in Tehran and is decorated with precious turquoises.
Invaluable lithographs are kept in its reference section which is housed in the basement of the building. It is also home to a complete archive of periodicals which dates back to 1981
