TEHRAN (AFP) -- Iran said Tuesday it would take a major step towards enriching uranium on an industrial scale during celebrations to mark the anniversary of the Islamic revolution in February, the official IRNA agency reported.
"During this (Iranian) year's revolutionary celebrations, the first phase of nuclear fuel production to meet industrial needs will be launched," First Deputy Foreign Minister Mehdi Mostafavi said in Saudi Arabia.
Iran will celebrate its "nuclearization" on February 11, the 28th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.
The country is aiming to have 3,000 uranium-enriching centrifuges installed at a key nuclear plant in Natanz by that time.
Mostafavi, who is in Mecca for the annual hajj pilgrimage, also said that Iran had "no intention" to quit the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) despite the sanctions imposed over its nuclear program.
