Foreign Currency Rate for Purchase of Foreign Books Falls

TEHRAN Deputy Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Ahmad Masjed-Jamei said the foreign currency rate for buying foreign books has been decreased to 2,000 rials a dollar which comparing to the rate in the last year book fair enjoys a 1,000 rials fall. In a joint gathering of experts and the fair's officials attended by minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance in the amphitheater of Social Sciences College of Tehran University, Masjed-Jamei added the purchasers holding B.A. degree can have a buy up to 300 dollars, M.A. degree holders up to 500, and Ph.D holders up to 650 dollars.

The interested should previously get the book tickets from one of the selected branches of Bank Refah Kargaran. In the current year, he added, the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education and the Islamic Azad University have allocated 5,000 and 4,000 million rials to book tokens respectively. In the meeting that was also participated by a number of publishers, Masjed-Jamei emphasized on the collaboration of authors and publishers for the betterment of publishing conditions in the country.

The deputy minister dubbed a book as a reliable criterion for assessing the cultural status of a nation adding that under present social circumstances there has been made a favorable change in book publication, especially in the arenas of literature and art books. Pointing to launching the information network Computer Book under the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Masjed-Jamei added that the network makes possible the access of the interested to the titles of works published in Iran daily.

According to Masjed-Jamei the list of the books presented in the 11th Tehran International Book Fair along with the author or translator's name will be on the network from tomorrow. In the ceremony the experts and publishers offered their strategies for the book fair to be held in the best way possible while heads of the 11 different committees of the fair answered questions posed by the participants.

The 11th Tehran International Book Fair will be held from May 20-29, 1998 in the permanent grounds for Tehran international fairs.
