Islam is a religion that touches each and every aspect of human life as it seeks to guide people of all races and regions in their day-to-day life. All events and developments that have occurred in Islamic history carry with them a message and provide guidance not only to Islam's followers but to all of humanity as well. One of the most significant events recorded in Islamic history is the martydom of Hazrat Hussein (AS), the Third Imam of the Household of the Holy Prophet (S).
He was marytred on the 10th of Muharram. The anniversary of his departure will be observed Thursday by Muslims and other devotees across the globe. True, the 10th of Muharram is an event preserved by the followers of the Shia School of Islam, but as President Seyed Mohammad Khatami in recent remarks said, the Third Imam (AS) is even beyond the differences between Sunnis and Shias. The most important moral lesson taught from the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) is that we must not bow before oppression, injustice, tyranny, evil and unfair treatment.
Kerbalathe scene of the historic epic that occurred some 1,000 years ago and which culminated in the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS)was, is, and will remain a model of all the noblest deeds in life, including the willingness to sacrifice one's all for the sake of the Almighty even life itself. The Kerbala epic revives after every commemoration of the event.
Another striking exmaple of a similar event that brings a revival of Islam with each celebration is the victory of the Islamic Revolution under the wise and able leadership of Imam Khomeini. Iran under the Shah was proceeding fast along the path of corrupt culture. It was the Islamic Revolution that showed the Iranian nation that the right path to the Creator is that which Islam teaches.
Leader of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei most appropriately advised the nation to observe mourning period of Muharram with a clear vision that religion and politics are intertwined. In short, the message of this month of Muharran is that we should do what the Almighty has enjoined usto obey Him and serve His creation.
