ALGIERS The Deputy Head of Algeria's Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), Ali Belhadj, has urged Muslim activists to call a truce in their holy war, the press said Sunday. In a letter, he asked the emirs, or chiefs, of three groups to opt for peace in the Zbarbar region, 70 kilometers (about 45 miles) east of Algiers and at Djabri, Korba and Youcef Bouberras, other FIS regions, the El-Alam Essiassi newspaper specified.

The daily La Tribune newspaper also reported the truce call, but no independent sources could confirm the move by Belhadj. (AFP)
