Iran's Entry Into ECOSOC an Intl. Success: Envoy

UNITED NATIONS Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations Hadi Nejad-Hosseinian termed here on Thursday Iran's membership to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as a promotion of the country's international status.
Nejad-Hosseinian told IRNA that Iran's entry into the ECOSOC, the third-ranking after the General Assembly and the Security Council, as a "big success" as far as its international status is concerned..
Members of the UN General Assembly, by secret balloting on Thursday, elected Iran as an ECOSOC member for a three-year mandate.
The 44-member ECOSOC holds a session every year to frame economic and social policies for the United Nations.
The Iranian envoy said that the success is a result of Irons policy of detente and its will to enhance relations with other states in the world.
In 1990, Iran was also elected as an Asian member to this council.
