TEHRAN – Iran’s Parliament voted to impeach and remove Economy Minister Abdolnaser Hemmati from office on Sunday.

In a plenary session, lawmakers approved the impeachment of Hemmati with 182 votes in favor, 89 against, one abstention, and one invalid vote out of 273 total ballots.

The morning and afternoon sessions of Parliament were dedicated to reviewing the impeachment request. Under parliamentary regulations, two hours were allotted for lawmakers in favor of the impeachment, two hours for the minister’s defense, and one hour for the president to argue in support of his minister.

Following the five-hour session, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf announced the results, confirming that Hemmati had failed to regain the confidence of lawmakers.

President Masoud Pezeshkian, who attended the session to defend Hemmati, left the chamber before voting began. Cabinet members present in Parliament also exited as lawmakers cast their votes.

Under Iranian law, Parliament can impeach ministers if at least 10 lawmakers submit a request. The minister in question must appear before Parliament within 10 days to respond and seek a renewed vote of confidence. If the minister fails to secure Parliament’s approval, they are dismissed and barred from joining the next cabinet immediately after their removal.
